The Lighthouse & the Tug

Updated: Apr 2, 2023

The purpose of a Lighthouse is to help save boats. The purpose of a Tug is to save boats too, but they go about their business very differently.

The Tug works incredibly hard, pushing and pulling, hooking and dragging, always striving to help boats in need. In the process it works itself ragged trying to get itself and others safely to shore. Always working hard, 24 hours a day, and there is always someone else to help.

The Lighthouse stands tall and steady shining it’s light for all to see. It does not yell about it’s awesome brightness, it just shines a beaming ray of light to show others the way. There is no pushing or pulling, no need to drag anyone ashore, it just quietly shines its light so that others can find their way. Lighthouses don't ask the ocean, storms or boats if they want light - they shine regardless of the situation and regardless of who’s looking.

The Tug is like an ambitious manager with indomitable spirit- always pushing or tugging trying to get people to buy into their vision, hoping that someone will just get in the boat with them. Yelling about the value & importance of their vision, and telling people that they cannot afford to ignore the opportunity being presented. People often spend years working like a Tug… expending all of their time and energy until they burn out.

Position yourself as a Lighthouse, and you won’t have to work like a Tug! Stand firm and radiate your light to help as many people as you can. Stand proud, knowing that there are always people looking for your light - they may be searching for the right opportunity, the tools and training to move them forward or the support to keep them going when they get lost in the fog.
